7...a (picture)-perfect "ending."

i've always heard that the number seven was significant in Scripture & represented some sense of spiritual perfection. i laughed when i realized that not only did july 25, 2011 mark the end of my seventh consecutive summer of camp ministry...but that last summer i served students for seven incredible weeks.
i don't believe in coincidences.

i'm overwhelmed when i look back over these last seven years...the lessons i've learned & how the Lord has stretched & grown me. here's just a few of them...

2005 @ camp la vida:
The Lord began a long process of challenging a quiet, introverted & unsure individual to be a leader...to leave all that she knew (friends, school, dreams for the future [music teacher]) for the sake of this God she'd heard about all her life.

The Lord challenged & used that same young girl to lead in ways she'd never imagined...
I thought I was going to throw up the first time I...
a) welcomed a camper into my cabin - realizing I had absolutely no idea what I was doing
b) sat my girls down for the first day of Bible study
c) led my first day of recreation & ended up taking the kids to the wrong place entirely (heather smith & joy wilson...you remember!!)
d) had to comfort a homesick camper...having no clue what to say because I, too, was anxious about my surroundings
e) was asked to be in a skit...on stage...in front of people
f) was asked to lead the staff in a few songs with the guitar...something I'd NEVER done for anyone publicly.

The Lord began opening my eyes to a world that was bigger than the one I'd known & grown comfortable in for far too long.
(my apologies...i didn't have facebook until late 2005...so i didn't have any pics!!!!)

2006 @ camp la vida:
When the Lord gives you a vision to do something & the passion to make it happen, you have no excuse but to carry it out as best you can. "To give anything less than your absolute best is to sacrifice the gift."

He challenged me to begin writing week-long dramas & camp-wide activities to enhance the Bible study experience.

He also opened the door for me to serve at a camp later that year in the Himalayan mountains of India.

2007 @ camp la vida:

The Lord continued stretching me in ways I'd never imagined...more skit & recreational activity writing, video editing, & worship leadership...all so far outside of my comfort zone it wasn't even remotely funny.

2008 @ camp la vida:
The greatest leaders are those who first learn how to follow.

Pride goes before a fall...& the Lord uses sinners to complete His work, of whom I am the worst. (Prov. 16:18 & I Tim. 1:15)

I'd MUCH rather serve & be with students than be in a place of authority & leadership.

2009 @ camp la vida:

2009 was the most difficult summer, by far...the Lord opened a door for me to serve half the summer at La Vida & then work a week-long camp in Wasilla, Alaska. When I returned to La Vida He very clearly said it was time to go. Sometimes the calling to leave a place of ministry is just as firm & obvious as the call to it.

Again, following the Lord's will means sacrificing my own plans & dreams. Even if I think my plan is good & gospel-centered, if it's not HIS plan, its's not right.

Stepping out in blind faith never gets easier.

2010 @ FUGE in PCB:

The Lord very clearly affirmed His calling to leave La Vida as early as training week! That entire summer was one of healing - & I spent EVERY spare moment sitting at the ocean taking in His bigness...His providence...His sovereignty...

No matter how much you've grown & learned, there are always those who can teach you more than you'd ever imagined. We always have room to grow.

Real worship is uncontrollable.

When the Lord draws together a team of individuals with like-minds truly seeking to serve, honor & glorify Him, nothing is impossible.

The Body of Christ truly is a family.

The Lord opened another door for me to serve for a few weeks in Nairobi, Kenya, Africa...where He continued to press on my heart the idea that the US is not my home.

2011 @ FUGE in PCB:

"Don't give up!" + "We are a team!! <--> We are a family!!" = they're not just words...when lived out, they mean something. No matter what life throws at you, we as believers are CONNECTED for a reason.

Ryan. Dylan. Hannah. Joseph. Taylor. Jeremy. Garrett. Jenna...just a few students close to my heart. You are loved beyond measure & were created with the highest of purposes. Remember you are connected to a family...&, more importantly, a Father who will never leave you or forsake you. (Hebrews 13:5)

It's never about recognition.

Love selflessly - expecting absolutely nothing in return...& in the end, you'll receive the greatest of blessings...JOY.

Prayer changes things...first & foremost - ME.

I was able to serve for 2.5 weeks in Sub-Saharan Africa with 25+ FUGE staffers. All summer, I got to share about what the Lord's doing there...and how students could connect with that ministry. What an incredible opportunity.

Genuinely beg God to do huge things...and He will. Plead on your face before Him & He'll open your eyes to massive open doors. The Lord has called me to Cape Town, South Africa for a few years all because of the CONNECTIONS over the last seven years. It's all in His perfect timing.

Like I said...

...I don't believe in coincidences.

so here's to new beginnings & whatever the next seven years may hold.

south africa

After another summer of camp, somewhat secluded from the real world for 2+ months, I finally got the chance to catch up on what's going on in Cape Town, South Africa...where, Lord-willing I will be soon. Check out the latest entry from one of my dear friends! So incredible

mind-blowing week 6....

i haven't blogged all summer, but i can't recall a time in my life where i've journaled more. every week after the students leave i've felt led to write about all the students who i got to pour into...their stories & how i saw God move in their lives for a very short 5 days. what an incredibly overwhelming blessing it will be to look back on and read through. i have to say though, week 6 is far too much to hand write...

week 5 my parents were in town...and it was humiliating. no, having them here was not the problem...i was excited for them to see this thing called camp that i love so much. the problem was, for whatever reason, the Lord saw fit to "bless" me with the worst group of students i've ever had in 7 years of camp ministry...and i'm still not sure why. it was, by far, the most challenging week i've ever experienced.

my kids:
had horrible attitudes,
constantly told inappropriate jokes,
and made fun of one another...as well as everyone else,
never stopped talking on the rec field so that i could adequately explain any of the REC initiatives,
refused to work as a team...ever,
randomly walked off in the middle of activities,
decided to talk about lap dances while i attempted to talk about unity,
and NEVER stopped talking unless it was time for Bible study...
during which they were silent & completely unresponsive.
to top it all off, i had the camp pastor's daughter in my group...and her frustration with the group was evident. she did her best to help. she was the only positive leader...even to the point of taking some of the other students aside and challenging them to step it up. didn't matter though...nothing changed. it's the first week i've ever felt like Bible study - or any part of camp for that matter - was completely ineffective with my students. by the time they left i felt completely defeated. and, like i said, very much unsure what it was i was supposed to have learned from the experience.

nevertheless, i was determined NOT to have another week like that. so the night before week 6 students arrived i spent some time literally on my face in prayer in my Bible study room.
i prayed over the week.
i prayed for the hearts of every student who was headed my way.
i prayed NOT for students who had it all together.
i prayed the Lord would bless me with BROKEN & LOST students...
with moldable & willing hearts...and good attitudes.

that's right - i prayed for broken students.

night 1 looks like this:
i meet my kids...we learn names, do a general overview of the week, go over the theme, and they fill out information cards. i ask them to mark on their cards if they want to hang out one-one-one. generally, i have 5-7 who want to talk. this week, out of 27 students, NINETEEN wanted to talk.

as i read thru their cards later that night during our meeting i was hammered with story after story. these kids laid it out there - NIGHT ONE. all throughout the week i kept a sharpie by my side. every time i had a one-on-one i changed the number on my hand. monday night before i went to bed i remember saying out loud..."1 down, 18 to go."
i remember going to bed on wednesday having had 5 intentional conversations with kids that day - each at least 30 minutes long...and still feeling like i should have had one more. this week was the best kind of challenging...meet some of my kids...

1) THAT DAY before "e" came to camp her father told her he didn't ever want to see her again. didn't want to have anything to do with her and wanted to give full custody to her mom. he told her church was crap & a waste of time. he'd gotten upset and said such hurtful things because she came to camp...but she knew she was supposed to be there. she said she had no regrets. she used to be a daddy's girl...and wanted to understand NOT why it had happened...but how to love him despite what he'd said. everyday she was ordered by the courts to call him at two specified times. she gave me daily updates on how they went. she would call and tell him that she loved him...he wouldn't respond. when i asked how i could pray for her she responded, "No special way necessarily...I just need some hope for my dad."

2) "J" had been kicked out by her parents - they didn't want her. she applied for foster care on her own & was denied because she was in "no immanent danger". so she moved in with a grandfather. she told me that she wanted to meet with a student who she'd just met this week in our group. he'd accepted Christ on night 2...and she wanted to encourage him. she said, "so many times people get saved and then no one comes alongside of them. i want to make sure he has a Bible and knows where to go from here." then she said the one thing she wanted me to pray for her about was that she would be a better, more courageous & bold spiritual leader...the irony. did i mention that on her information card when asked how i could be praying specifically for her she wrote, "if you don't mind, i'd like to pray for you."????

3) when asked on his info card if he was a Christian, "d" marked maybe. he defined Christianity as being graceful. but on night two he accepted Christ (see above). he was led to Christ by another student in leah's Bible study. his leader found me that night to share the news. he lives in a one-bedroom house with 7 other people and fears that people judge him every time he walks out of his house.

4) i always have the students play a game on night 1 where they all stare at one another one at a time and shout out their names 3 times...it's a fast way for them to learn names. "k" curled up in the fetal position and began to rock back & forth when the students said her name...i found out AFTERWARDS that she has asperger's...i felt like a horrible human being.

5) "m" was recently diagnosed 3 months ago with bipolar disorder and is on medication. she is also ADHD, has asthma & heart problems, and frequently gets dizzy & blacks out. she was grateful for the diagnosis because she finally understood what was wrong. she never understood why she would be happy one moment and then want to hit the people around her the next. her prayer request for the week was that her "moods would be kept in check." she recently lost her grandmother & her dad was diagnosed with dementia.

6) "b" was a student i had last year & loved. his mother and brother fight all the time. mom is korean and hangs on to that heritage. people don't accept her. mom and dad's marriage is on the rocks. "b" is the peacemaker...home life = constant tension. but he knew he was supposed to be a leader...by the middle of the week when asked if he could do any one thing that he knew wouldn't fail he was the first student to respond, "i'd preach."

7) "k2" was another student i had last year. she was raped. her mom told her that Christianity was ridiculous and she didn't want anything to do with her. Her mom is on drugs and they've been forced to be apart because of it. The ONE thing she wanted me to know about her was that she prayed for her mom - that she would change. She wanted me to pray that one day she could understand why her mom "hates" her & doesn't want anything to do with her.

8) "b" wanted me to pray for her boyfriend - who is a wiccan...she doesn't know how to talk to him about Jesus because he wants proof

9) "c" wanted to me several times throughout the week. he became such a leader but he just wanted me to pray for his parents' relationship with one another.

10) "c2" wanted prayer about her home life. her parents divorced and she's been living with her mom. she wants to live with her dad, "but it's not that easy." her younger sister struggles with an eating disorder.

11) "a" was struggling with "dealing with sins...and moving on. accepting that [she] is forgiven and can leave it behind."

12) "c3" never opened up too much about her situation, but she struggled with "learning to forgive the ones who hurt her". in her words, "some things have brought me down that i'm trying to overcome but i could have it a lot worse and i'm thankful for each breath i take everday."

that was LESS THAN HALF of my students.

by the world's standards, my kids had every right to be mad at the world...to hate their home lives, their families and God. but they taught me so much.

day 2: Bible study = great. best day of recreation ever. dumbest games but the best attitudes. they encouraged one another. they had great attitudes no matter how many times i made them do the same thing over and over. we got to the rec. rally...they were loud. they all had smiles on their faces. they cheered. they encouraged the other groups...and they walked away empty handed. but i reminded them...DON'T GIVE UP. as i walked back to the room from the rec. field, i told "j" (one of my incredible leaders) not to get discouraged...that i needed him to continue to lead the team with the awesome attitude he had that day. he turned to me and said, "can i say something to the group tomorrow?" i asked what and he said, "well, my coach told me this one time...and it's not a spiritual thing, but i think it definitely applies...'to give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.'" OF COURSE, i let him.

day 3: Bible study = great. one of my leaders said if he knew he wouldn't fail, he'd preach. we walk out the door to recreation...and it was POURING. so we did rainy day rec inside that tiny room...made up a ridiculous cheer to scream out all about being barefoot...and they rocked it out! but again, they walked away empty-handed. as they all started to disperse to lunch i yelled at them to meet in our room one more time before they left. as the last one dwindled in i closed the door behind me and stood up on a chair and told them i wanted to see every eye in the room. i reminded them of "j"s speech from earlier that morning - and had a very real moment with them. i told them how this was something i was personally struggling with - doing good and not getting recognition for it. BUT...as believers we are called to that very thing - to love whether we receive love in return, to do good whether people recognize you for it or not...we should never tire of doing good. even if we weren't recognized all week with a "reward," we knew we were doing what we were called to do - be encouraging to one another as well as the other teams, work as a family and persevere with positive attitudes no matter what. that afternoon...someone backed into my car...oh the irony again.

day 4: Bible study = a little rushed, but man God moved in INCREDIBLE ways. students who are committing to denying self and going home to live a life completely devoted to Christ no matter the cost scratch their name off of a poster & replace it with a sticker that says "my cross." as i looked up a few minutes into the activity i was overwhelmed by the number of students kneeling together in pairs, hands on shoulders in tears praying for one another. they didn't need me to prompt them to lift one another up...they took that initiative on their own.

that same morning i felt HORRIBLE...and at the beginning of Bible study i'd texted leadership to see if someone could lead rec. for me. they lined it up for me and all was good to go...except that as Bible study came to a close i was feeling slightly better and wanted to be with my kids so much that i put my shoes on and decided i was going. several of my students kept saying, "don't push it" - they knew and could tell i felt horrible...but i was determined. as i walked out the door, with my hand still on the handle out of nowhere something stings me. i never saw it...but my leg immediately turned all kinds of nasty white & red and started swelling. i literally yelled, "OH, COME ON!" needless to say, i didn't go to rec.

i took some benedryl & a 30 minute nap...then walked back in my room to prep for my ethics track time (which was interesting since i was doped up). i walked in the room to see a flag my kids had won that day draped over my table with several notes from them saying, "we did it! we didn't give up." another note was a half a page letter from "j" saying he'd gotten the group together, they'd prayed for me, he'd reminded them of all our talks and they rocked it out.

as i ran to thank the staffer who'd taken over for me, she blew me away by saying, "i didn't lead them...they led me!"

that afternoon was mega relay on the beach. my group was PUMPED. we painted up & cheered all the way down to the sand. we stretched & even prayed beforehand. long story short...it was a disaster. "k" (girl with aspberger's) did izzy dizzy and started running the wrong direction. two other kids dropped the girls they were supposed to be carrying and kept dropping them in an attempt to recover. during extreme tunnel (all the kids crawl through one another's legs) somehow one of my biggest guys got at the end...as he attempted to crawl through, he began lifting the other students off the ground on his back...and an absolutely hilarious domino effect happened. about 13 kids ended up on top of one another...at this point, everyone else has long finished ahead of us...and are now crowded around cheering them on. i can't even pick one of my kids up...but i kept screaming (when i could gasp from the laughter) DON'T GIVE UP! what seemed like 10 minutes later, they finished...and immediately got up and cheered...they didn't care.
they.had.fun.

they won the fuge cup.
and it was never about the fuge cup.

they got it.
the theme for the week was "connect" - and they did.
they realized that winning isn't everything.
they realized that no matter what life throws at you, you are connected to a body of believers that is there to pick you up.
they realized that it's not how you start it's how you finish.
they realized that each one of them mattered...were loved...had purpose.

i could go on and on...but man, what an incredible week.
praying week 7 blows week 6 out of the water!!

who wrote the rain...

i don't usually blog this often, but for whatever reason lately (despite the massive amount of schoolwork to do) i've felt both compelled & inspired to write.

today marked the beginning of easter break.
for those of you who aren't familiar with easter break, let me clue you in: it's not a break.
it's a week off of classes but a week of intense paper-writing...all the while juggling work, travel & time with family. i, personally, have 4 papers/projects to do. this is the first break, however, in the last year and a half that i have not traveled. so the last of the roommates left early this afternoon...leaving me to weather the storms of the week alone...yes, pun definitely intended.

around 4pm today the rain started to fall. i started getting messages from friends informing me of a bad storm headed our way. all day i'd thought it looked like the typical "tornado-weather" day. little did i know it actually was. long, long story short (because it's not the point of the post at all) i very quickly found myself...
without power,
without a tv/radio,
without a computer
& very aware of the fact that i was without my roommates.

when i saw the rain spiraling outside our 2nd story balcony i grabbed a candle, a piper book & all the pillows off my bed and jumped in the tub (all the while thinking to myself - this really isn't going to do much good in a 2nd story apartment).

come to find out...we'd been issued a tornado warning as well as a tornado watch...and wake county was "in a state of emergency" (whatever that means). lee county (right "next door") had several tornadoes touch down & several deaths as a result. several touched down in raleigh, too.

as of sunday morning:
80+ tornadoes touched down yesterday in nc
22+ deaths
several missing
32,000+ still without power close to 24 hours after (power poles & lines completely ripped out of the ground & missing)

our entire apartment complex as well as the connecting neighborhood (& much of wake forest) was without power from 4-10pm...which brings me to my point in writing.

i spent a lot of time in the dark today.
i spent a lot of time alone today.
i spent a lot of time extremely reliant on my phone today.

once it got dark & i could no longer strain to read my articles & books i looked up and saw the moon almost perfectly shining onto my balcony and into the sliding glass door. i was surrounded by candles & the sound of the wind coming through the screen...it was pretty picture perfect. almost instinctively i picked up my guitar and the first song i started playing was...

who wrote the rain
who wrote the sun in
who called your name
where are you running
i'm gonna be there near or far
i'm gonna meet you where you are
who wrote the rain
who wrote the sun in

pretty incredible that the song is called, "you will find Me". He was there today. always is.
sometimes it takes a storm to get us to stop - to drag us away from our phones, computers, friends, whatever...
"sometimes our God seizes a backdrop of darkness in order to accentuate His Light."
no matter what the storm, though, we can find Him there.

later on i left to run an errand and when i returned i saw seminary students everywhere around our dark apartment complex. at almost every building you could see the shimmer of a small flashlight and a small crowd of people...just talking. the light of the moon provided more light than any of us had in our apartments. so for 15 minutes or so i sat in the back of my SUV with the door open just taking it all in.

the moon.
the stars.
the wind.
the voices.

looking around at the darkness i was reminded of my overseas experiences. i was reminded, specifically, of africa. and that's when it hit me like a ton of bricks.
COMMUNITY.
those countries are so communal...they don't live for television, radio, and internet. and when we're forced outside of that, neither do we. in those moments when we're stripped away from those things, we RUN to community.

interesting.
just some thoughts to ponder.
this isn't the typical, well-thought out, flows just perfectly blog.

where do YOU find Him?
when do YOU run to community?

You Won't Relent

against every single ounce of judgment in musicality in me i'm posting this song. what i wouldn't give to be able to actually record this song with these two...the 3-part harmony that you can't really hear is incredible...and the song is AMAZING. the version on youtube is 13 minutes long...so, for now, this cut-off, TERRIBLE quality video will have to do! warning: turn down the volume! ;)

"You Won't Relent"

You won't relent until You have it all
My heart is Yours

I'll set You as a shield upon my heart
As a shield upon my heart
For there is love that is as strong as death
Jealousy demanding as the grave
Many waters cannot quench this love

You won't relent until You have it all
My heart is Yours

I'll set You as a shield upon my heart
As a seal upon my heart
For there is love that is as strong as death
Jealousy demanding as the grave
Many waters cannot quench this love

You won't relent until You have it all
My heart is Yours

Come be the fire inside of me
Come be the flame upon my heart
come be the fire inside of me
Until You and I are one

tonight

not avoiding the other posts on south africa!!!! they will come soon!
just finally posting a really rough recording of a song from this summer.

pardon the terrible audio quality...
& as for the waves in the background -
just a reminder of where i was when i wrote it.
the ocean will always be a place that brings me to my knees!

posting the lyrics again as i changed a few words!

another long night
i sit here & cry
when will i speak the words i feel deep inside
lost & confused
you're slightly amused
moved on like everything we were was alright
you're alright
alright

but tonight
put away all your plans
& tonight
just rest in my presence
tonight
open your heart & be washed by the waters of my love
my love

i don't have words
i don't have a song
all i have's this feelin that i don't belong
push away the world
& run into Your arms
lay my head upon Your chest & listen to Your heart
to Your heart
Your heart
to Your heart
and you said

tonight
put away all your plans
& tonight
just rest in My presence
tonight
open your heart
& be washed by the waters of My Love
tonight

i know you're hurting
i know you've failed
forgiven, forgotten
My Love will prevail
I know you're trying
to earn back My Love
but the blood of My Son
was more than Enough

i know you're hurting
i know you've failed
forgiven, forgotten
My Love will prevail
child, just stop trying
to earn back My Love
cause the blood of My Son
was more than Enough

so tonight
put away all your plans
& tonight
just rest in My presence
tonight
just open your heart
& be washed by the waters of My Love

i don't have words
i don't have a song
all i have's this feelin
i'm where i belong

south africa - 1 of many to come...

It’s taken me well over a week to even begin to sum up my recent experiences in Cape Town, South Africa. No picture, journal or video could ever come close to adequately describing how the Lord worked in my own heart and life that week. There were so many moments that will forever be etched in my mind. Two, in particular, stand out to me tonight as I reflect.

Each afternoon our team had the opportunity to work with the girls & boys clubs at several schools in the area that the missionaries are currently working with. One afternoon our 7 girls got to sit down and share testimonies with the 7 girls that attended that day. With each story we shared, they grew ever more intent on listening. After 45 minutes of talking, we had one last testimony to share. We’d told them earlier that afternoon that we had a gift for each of them. So, to break up the monotony we gave them the option of getting their gifts or hearing the last story. To our surprise, they all insisted in unison on hearing the story first. The hunger and thirst these girls had for discipleship was so overwhelmingly evident! They cared little about the material and yearned, instead, for this Love that we spoke of.
The next day at another school we had a similar experience. After sharing we placed an angel pin on the sweater of each girl and talked about God’s love for them. Kneeling down I looked into the eyes of my new friend and asked her, “So what are you going to remember every time you see this pin?” With tears in her eyes she replied, “Jesus loves me.” I turned to do the same to the young lady seated next to her. I asked her the same question. When she had no answer I turned back to the first girl. Again I asked her, “Will you tell her what you are going to remember every time you look at this pin?” And again, with a tear rolling down her cheek, she declared, “Jesus loves me.” I’m not so sure anyone had ever told her that before.

Since I’ve been back, several startling facts & statistics have been running through my mind daily. We were told that:
Every 26 seconds someone in South Africa is raped.
Every 28 minutes a child in South Africa is raped.
2,000 people a day contract HIV/AIDS
There is a commonly held myth that if you rape a young child or virgin you can rid yourself of AIDS.

Children in South Africa are forced to grow up faster than they should. The children we interacted with have faced far more than most of us ever will. They need to know there is hope beyond this world. They need to know there is Love beyond comprehension. The more I spent time with the people of South Africa, the more my heart yearned to share with them this Love that I’ve grown up so privileged to know about.

May we continue to PRAY expectantly for these children & the missionaries who are diligently sharing this message of hope and love with them.
May we GIVE generously & with glad hearts to support that work in South Africa & around the world.
May we GO without hesitation wherever He leads to fulfill the calling the Lord has placed on each of our lives.

More to come on the trip SOON!

another taste of africa...

quick update...which will probably be in short sentences & all over the place!!!

many of you know i have a heart for international missions. the Lord has been gracious to throw yet another opportunity into my lap...& not just the opportunity, but the provisions as well!

3 of my passions in life [faith & family understood]:
- music
- camp ministries
- taking the gospel to the unreached

this past summer i did camp for the 6th consecutive year - this time, though, with a new organization. i worked for lifeway with centrifuge camps in panama city beach, florida. i will return there again this summer as well - and i'm PUMPED!

why? because not only do i get to continue a ministry i love for the SEVENTH summer (which is absolutely mind-blowing when i actually stop to think about it), but i get to do so having taken an even more intimate part in the missions partnership. this summer starts a new 5-year partnership between FUGE camps & south africa. hence, our trip.

so tomorrow a group of almost 30 staff from camps across the US will meet in atlanta (some for the first time) and head out for SA! we will split into 3 teams and spread out across johannesburg, soweto, & cape town. each team will do something different, but our ultimate goals are the same - 1) to minister to the people (as well as the missionaries) of South Africa and 2) to learn more about life, the people, culture, needs, etc. this coming summer when camp starts up, those of us who have had the experience get to share that with our respective staffs & spread the word to our students as well. i'm so pumped to have such a first-hand experience directly tied in with what these kids are giving money to support each week!

please pray for us!
the cape town team (of which i am a part) will be worshiping with the people of SA on sunday and making further preparations that night.

then, monday-friday we will be working in 3 different schools tutoring, doing after school clubs, etc. - loving on the kids & sharing the Gospel of Truth & Love!

thank you SO MUCH for the continued support & prayer!
update soon after we get back!

how my heart yearns.

the heart is a funny thing.

i was recently challenged by this question when i said it out loud to a friend & realized i was the one that was supposed to be hearing it:

do you seek & pursue the restoration of your relationship with Jesus
with the same intensity,
fervor
& determination
that you seek & pursue the restoration, or even the the simple existence,
of earthly relationships?

do you really?
i don't.

i care so much about what others think of me - from strangers to my closest friends...but do i care that much what Jesus thinks when He looks at my life? wait, if i'm really honest with myself - do i care at all? what about my heart? what DOES my heart look like?

where do i turn in the midst of bad news? people.
fear? people.
pain? people.
heartache? people.
loss? people.
stress? running. food. sleep. then people.
joy? people.
excitement? people.
elation? people.
good news? people.
what about in the mundane moments of everyday life...even then...people.

but Jesus is not one of those people...at least, not until i've run to all the others first...if ever.

the problem is people fail. people aren't meant to be on the thrones of our hearts...Jesus is. how do i run to Him, then?
prayer...

in the midst of difficult times, the Lord is near...but whether we choose to acknowledge His presence, His arms & His sovereignty in our circumstances is up to us. do you fall on your face before Him? are you real with Him? do you cry to Him?

i recently read through the book of Job...a story i thought i was so familiar with, but it blew me away. Job lost everything. his family. his security. all that he had worked for. his possessions. even his health. Job struggled immensely. he expressed, "my face is red with weeping, deep shadows ring my eyes...my spirit is broken...my eyes have grown dim with grief; my whole frame is but a shadow...my days have passed, my plans are shattered and so are the desires of my heart" (16:16, 17:1, 7, 11). he despaired of life & even questioned his existence. he asked a lot of "whys."

how often do we do the same? when the things of this world - when the people of this world - are stripped from us. when we lose all that is precious to us, don't we begin to ask the whys? don't we allow grief to overcome & satan to whisper lies making us question, at times, why we are even alive? whatever the form of your question...

there is hope.

Job spoke powerful words in the midst of such pain.
"I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end He will stand upon the earth.
And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God;
I myself will see Him with my own eyes - I, and not another.
HOW MY HEART YEARNS WITHIN ME...
I am not silenced by the darkness, by the thick darkness that covers my face."
Job 19:25-27 & 23:17

so what does your heart yearn for most? as i was reminded this morning - there is purpose in brokenness. as david proclaimed, "let the bones you have crushed rejoice" (psalm 51:8) because that brokenness is part of our healing. no matter the circumstance - good or bad - for what does your heart most yearn? like Job, may we keep our eyes on the eternal, always remembering that when all else fails, when all is stripped from us, our purpose remains and our hope in the eternal is secure.

If my heart has one ambition
If my soul one goal to seek
This my solitary vision 'til I only dwell in Thee
That I only dwell in Thee
'Til I only dwell in Thee
(brooke fraser)

the heart is a funny thing...
but may that be the all-consuming prayer of your heart...

"til i only dwell in Thee."
